Uniforms & Accoutremets

We based this guide on the most recent information available for the 14th Tennessee. Research continues and we will revise the guidelines as new details become available. All new members should adhere to these standards when purchasing uniforms and accoutrements. Existing members ought to likewise conform, when replacing gear. You should purchase new equipment in the order listed.

1.Rifle: 1853 (3 band) Enfield, 1855 or 1861 Springfield. or Richmond Rifle. Included should also be a bayonet, and Scabbard.

2.Brogans(shoes): Union or Confederate.

3.Leather Gear: Includes belt, buckle, cartridge box, cap box, and if desired, a cartridge box sling. Leather should be black. Sling may be a Confederate canvas one. Buckle will be a plain open frame (Georgia Frame, Forked Tongue, or Roller Buckle). VS belt plates will be allowed in small numbers. (VS stands for Volunteer State and is the only known Tennessee belt plate. Very rare.) No Confederate cartridge box plates, or OS belt plates. Captured US gear is allowed.

4.Canteen:Any authentic style.

5.Haversack: Union or Confederate.

6.Hat: Slouch or other wide brimmed hat. Should have ribbon sewn around brim as well as a band and bow around crown. Caps (kepis) allowed in small numbers. Forage Caps (the taller floppy kind). are discouraged, since they seem to have been obtained privately rather than government issued.

7.Trousers with suspenders: May be Confederate, Civilian, or Federal. Confederate trousers must be of grey or brown Jean wool material and have "Mule Ear" pockets and the buckle fixture on the back as per Richmond Depot issue. Federal trousers may be dark blue or Kersey (sky blue).

8.Shirt: Any authentic style and color.

9.Jacket: Richmond Depot pattern.Type II. Grey or Brown Jean Wool material. Buttons should be brass I, Federal Eagle, or wood. Jacket should have a nine button front, epaulettes, belt loops (sewn down), no buttons on cuffs, and most importantly, NO COLORED TRIM OF ANY KIND!!!

10.Other: Mess gear to include tin plate or canteen half, tin cup (a large heavy one is recommended), fork, knife and spoon, wool socks, housewife (sewing kit), and a bedroll to include a wool blanket, gum blanket or poncho, and a shelter half.

Other equipment such as vests, greatcoats, and knapsacks may be purchased, but are not required. Any optional gear should not be bought until all required gear has been obtained.

This list may not be in the order in which you want to obtain your equipment. Most new members want to buy their Jacket first. The sequence of items in the list reflects the quantity and type of loaner gear available and how visible a piece of equipment appears. We have a few extra uniforms, but very few extra rifles. Use common sense when buying new gear. Get your shoes and musket first, and as soon as possible thereafter the rest of your uniform.

You may get some of your gear from the Sutlers; usually shoes, rifle, blankets, belts, etc.. However, your uniform will have to be ordered through the mail to get the one of the correct type. New members should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER go to the Sutlers to buy equipment without an officer or one of the NCO's from the 14th. The Sutlers are not familiar with our standards and may try to sell you something incorrect for the impression our unit portrays. Ordering through the mail takes longer, but you have a wider selection and may get a better price.

If you already have equipment, check with the unit commander before replacing all your gear. As long as you have authentic reproductions, existing outfits & traps will probably be allowed with only a few modifications. As equipment wears out, replace it with gear conforming to these guidelines.

We expect members to acquire all of the required equipment and uniform within one year of the time you join our unit. If you have any questions or problems, do not hesitate to contact your unit commander
