Archer's Brigade/Hill's Division

As Archers men filed into the railroad cut, Kearny advanced elements of his division (III/1). When Kearny spotted Archers brigade in motion, he ordered the 63rd PA (Robinsons brigade III/1/1) to charge. The 1st Tennessee repulsed the first charge, and then the entire brigade settled down into a nasty firefight with the 63rd.

Kearny went looking for support and found Stevensons division (IX/1) nearby. Stevenson agreed to send in Leasures brigade (IX/1/2) against the portion of the railroad cut held by Archer. Leasures brigade consisted of the 100th PA, called the Roundheads, and the 46th NY. He led his advance with the 100th PA (577 men) exchanged volleys, then charged. The assault forced a portion of Archers line out of the railroad cut. However, Leasure went with out support and Hills counterattack drove him out.
