At the far end of Confederate lines, almost six or seven miles away from Mayre's Heights, the 14th Tennessee took position. Here, Hills Division held the extreme right flank of the armys line. Archers Tennessee Brigade manned the last forward position of the entire Division, with elevated artillery support to its right and rear. However, a misunderstanding somewhere among commanders left Archers left in the air with a gap wide enough for a brigade between it and the nearest supports. At precisely this point, Union forces poured through and nearly broke Confederate lines. Archers left turned to face the intruders and helped box them in pretty solidly when Earlys Division countered and drove the Unionists back.
