Who Killed Reynolds?

"... General Reynolds was killed at the opening of the battle, which is quite true, and he was killed directly in the rear of the right of the Second Wisconsin Regiment, and not more than 100 feet distant. He was struck by a stray ball immediately after the volley the Second Wisconsin received as it charged over the top of the ridge where Archer's brigade was lying."

(Capt. Geo. Otis, Co. I, 2nd Wisconsin)

"Forward men, forward, for God's sake, and drive those fellows out of those woods."

(Maj. Gen. Jo. Reynolds ordering the 2nd Wisconsin to attack Archer's brigade.)

"The enemy (Archer's Brigade) still pushed on, and was not much more than 60 paces from where the Gen'l was. Minnie balls were flying thick. The Gen'l turned to look towards the Seminary (I suppose to see if the other troops were coming on). As he did so, a minnie ball struck him in the back of the neck, and he fell from his horse dead.

"He was moving toward the point of the woods, when there was a sharp fire from the rebels (Archer's Brigade), who lay in the edge, and it was drawn upon Reynolds by his little escort.
