Camp Near Maryland
Hights Oct 15th 1862
To Ella G. Smith my ever dear and affectionate daughter having a few moments to spare I will address a few lines to you and let you know how I am this morning I am well as usual and hope when this letter reaches you it will find you enjoying the same great blessing I have got to go out on two hours drill now so I shall wate untill after I come in to finish this, well Georgia I am off from duty again have just been to dinner I think you would not like to board here with me for you would not be likely to get so much frosted cake as you talk of having at home sometimes when you are finding fault at home some times about what you have to eat remember how much better you fare than a great many others that I could mention be contented with your lot, I did not receive a line from you in the last letter mother wrote me so you must write a good long one in answer to this give me all the news you can think of you must always be a good girl which I suppose you are help your mother all you can so that I shall hear a good report from her, well Edgar I want to say a few words to you you of course will remember the instructions I gave you before I left home in regard to being a good boy I hope now that I a away from home you will try and see if you cant be a great deal better than you used to be when I was at home Frank you must try and do the best you know how then I shall love you Fredy I need not tell himn to be a good boy of cours he is and will be first rate from your ever loveing father and protector A.C.
