Beloved Daughter Ella
I now take this opportunity to answer your letters which came to hand in due time. I was well pleased to receive them and to hear that you was well they found me well and am the same at this time and hope this will find you the same. I should have answered your letter of Aug 28th soon after I received it if you had not wrote that you thought perhaps you might be at Moodus before I would have time to answer it in Merriden, You said that you was very much disapointed when Aunt Elibs letter come not to find any thing in it addressed to you: I am sorry that it happened so, but the reason was you wrote that you thought you should go home with Mother so I thought there would be no use in writing to you there: I therefore wrote to you and directed it to Moodus and I hope you have got it before this time, You wanted to know in your first letter if Fred Chapman had recovered from his wound that I am unable to tell you I have not heard any thing from since the 23rd of July. He was taken prisnor at the time he was wounded and has not been heard from since, So you see that we know not whether he is dead or alive, and the picture that you wanted from him I guess you will have to waite a while for: And you wanted me to send you my photograph I would like to pleas you by so doing but in the first place there is no chance to have it taken here and if there was I have no money to pay for haveing it taken: In that case I dont see but you will have to go without it for a while. I should like to have been in Meriden and took supper with you at the time you wished I could taste of your victuals that you cooked but as that could not be I must be sattified to stay where I am and live on what is provided for me by government: I have no doubt but you are a good cook and I live in hopes that the time will soon come when I can come and eat with you and enjoy your company. That other Gentleman you spoke about is all right has escaped the balls thus far. Now Georgie about your going to school in Meriden I do not think it best for you to do it this winter I do not feel able to send you away to school while I am in the army waite till I come home and then I will see what can be done for you: I want you should be a good girl mind your Mother and behave like a lady, set a good example for your brothers I must tell you that I am in Atlanta been here since the 2nd of Sept, I must close so good day My love to you dear daughter From your Father A.C. Smith
