Dear & beloved Wife
I now seat myself to answer your letter of Aug 28th received it this morning was glad to hear that you were all well, it found me well and are at the presant time & I hope this will find you all in good health; you wrote in your letter as though you thought it doubtful whether you had a Husband or not I suppose it would be all the same to you whether you had or not; but however I think you have one yet and he has not forgoten you although it has been some time since I wrote to you but still I think of the old gal often. I received your letter that you wrote in Meriden but did not answer it for I wrote only the day before so I thought I would wait until I had another from you and that I have just got to day; I answered Elibs & Ella,s I presume you have got Ella,s before this time for I directed it to Moodus becaus she wrote that she thought she should go home with you, but I received another from her day before yesterday and found her still in Meriden I shall not answer it untill I find out where she is for she thought perhaps before I would get hers and have time to answer it she should go home so I shall waite till I hear from her again: I had a letter from Mother Brainard this morning shall answer it as soon as I can: You have I presume before this time heard and read of the taking of Atlanta by our army. If so it is the truth that southern city that the Rebs have fought so hard for an tryed to hold has finly fell into our hands and I think we shall hold it for all their takeing it from us again; we took it on the 2nd day of Sept; the civil authority come out with a flag of truce and surrendered the city to the third Division of the 20th Corps I went into the city the 2nd of Sept and have been inside of the rebs brest works ever since but not in one place all of the time we have just moved our camp to day how long we shall stay in this spot I cannot tell. The 4th , 14th and 20th Corps are garrisoning the city at this time; I expect the army will lay still now a short time to recruite up a little and then it will move on the rebs again: commence a winter campaign: I have not got payed off yet and dont know when I shall I should not care any thing about being paied at presant if it was not for my family but I hope you will make out to get alonge I want you should write me how much money you have got if any and how much you owe to the stores and other folks also whether you have got your state bounty or not. some of them have had their ten dollar checks I believe Mr Purple had his but there was not anough to go round so I did not get mine but it will come some time, I must close so good afternoon my love and a kiss to all of you dear Wife & children From your Husband A.C. Smith
