Acworth, Ga,
Monday morning June 27th/64
Dear Wife
I now seat myself to answer your letters of June 5th & 12th , I received the one of the 5th about a week ago and the other yesterday morning, I did not answer the first as soon as I should for I had just wrote to you the day or two before I received yours, I was glad to receive them and to hear that you were all well they both found me well and are the same to day, I hope when this reaches you it will find you all in good health, It is very warm here now, it is a very bad time for the wounded it is so warm, there has been some pretty hard fightting down here & I think perhaps there has got to be more of it. but I think we are good for the rebs however and I presume they will find it to be so before many days, I am back here to acworth yet, it is eight or ten miles from the front and I am satisfied to stay here as longe as they see fit to keep our Regt at this place, but I dont expect to stay a great while at the longest, there has been a lul in the fightting for a few days past but I think it will commence againe before long I have just heard a few big guns in the direction of the front so I should not wonder if the ball opens againe to day. I hear very good news from the army of the Potomac and I hope they will continue to be successful, for if they are and our army does what I think it will in the cours of a short time now. It is my opinion that the southern confedracy is gone up, you spoke about selling the grass in the field and wanted to know what I thought it was worth that I cant very well tell you for I have not seen it and I dont know what hay is worth in Moodus this summer you must use your own judgment and do as well as you can but you probably will sell it or have it cut before you receive this, about Ella,s picture you did not send it to me or at least I have not received it, I have writen to Georgie but have not received an answer yet, I received those pieces that you sent, I think that the New York cloth will answer for a poor soldiers Wife when he is at worke for thirteen dollars a month you must remember and live within your income not be to extravagant in dress for it will cost you somthing for food the next year to come. You say that Edgar comes home every Saturday night now I think It would be a great deal better for him to stay there all of the time and go to East Hampton to meeting than to run home every week and for my part I wish that Washington would keep him there all of the time and keep him straight to and let him know that there is some one that can govern him I dont want him to grow up to do just as he is amind to, you ask if I have seen the elephant yet I think I have seen his trunk and one tusk at any rate I think if you had been with me some of the time you would have run to the rear faster then you did when you saw that one over to Colchester coming for you so good day From your Husband A.C. Smith
PS you say you dont know as you direct your letters right
