Beloved Wife

I take this opportunity to answer your letter of the 28th of May  I received it yesterday morning was glad to get it and to hear that you were all well it found me well and am to day and I hope these few lines will find you all the same  our army is fighting the rebs yet and have been doing somthing at it ever since we first commenced with them our losses have been considrable heavy but we are constantly driveing them before us and gaining ground on them  they the Oficers I mean tell their soldiers that our army is surrounded and they and also the citizens believe it and ask us how we expect to get out if we are going to surrender or cut our way out,  They also tell them that Lee has whipped Grante in Virginia and that Lee,s army is almost to Washington.  Now in regard to the statement of our army I know it is all a falshood ,there. may be a few reb cavalry or bushwhackers in our rear but we dont have any very serious aprehensions from them at presant the cars run smack to the front within two miles of our line of battle so you see that dont look very much like being surrounded,  I heard this forenoon that our corps that is the 20th with Joe Hooker at its head drove the rebs on our left four miles yesterday  I tell you old Joe is one of the boys the rebs are afraide of him and his corps, our Reg,t is stationed at Acworth now, this place is made the base of supplies for a part of the army and we are here guarding them our Colonel is Commander of this post, I am on guard to day our whole company is on, I dont know how long this job will last but would not care if till my time was out, it is pretty warm to day I expect we shall see some hot weather this summer it has been a good deal rainy this month had some rather cold nights, you wrote about Edgars not likeing quite as well that is nothing strange you must not let him leave that place on any consideration whatever I know what it is to have a boy drive plough there is many times when a man will get provoked and feel cross.  Edgar must not think it is going to be all smoth weather there will be some rough I must close my love to all of you  From your affectionate Husband A.C. Smith
