Cowan Tenn March 18th/64

Dear & beloved Wife & Daughter

I now take this opportunity to answer your letter of March the 8th  I received it yesterday just after noon should have got it a little sooner but the Rebs made a raid on the Rail Road the day before a few miles above here so that the trains were detained part of a day  they burnt two cars and robed what pashengers there was aboard, our first Lieut or the one that has been for some time past he is promoted to Capt of Co. H now he was abord of the train at the time and they took $370,00/ three hundred & seventy dollars from him and his watch & Boots & Coat.  There was one Quarter Master aboard they got $900,00/ nine hundred dollars from him and there was a number more that lost all they had,  Your letter found me well and I still remain the same to day and I  hope when this reaches you it will find you all the same, It is quite fine wether here to day though the wind blows considrable like March, for three or four days past it has been awful cold and blustering about as bad as we often see in Connecticut this time of year, Georgia you seam to have a great dislike for going to school but I shall insist upon your going this summer notwithstanding what you may say to the contary you need not be afraid of getting to good an education if you live and become a woman you may see the time that you wont be sorry that you improved your younger days at school so take a Fathers advice and see how well you can doe.  I am sorry you did not send me your picture for I expected it would come if you had one on hand, you wanted to know who was going to have it before you sent it,  I think it is anough for you to know that it is an intimate friend of your Fathers, and I think that you can trust me for I would not presume to let any one have it that was not worthy of it if you send it I will let you know the name hereafter and perhaps send you the picture of the one that haves yours.  I have got to go out and drill now so will finish after I come in.  Have been on drill and just com in it almost night must close soon and get some supper.  It would suit me first rate if I was ware you could get supper for me and get down and deat with me but when that time will be if ever I cannot tell but hope in the course of eightteen months more. You said you had not had any money that you could call your own for a great while  I will send you a dollar in this letter you may do what you are amind to with it only putit to a good use.  Lucinda I think perhaps that manuer had better be got out from under the stable floor and put on the mowing supper is ready and I must close so good day from your affectionate Husband & Father A.C. Smith
